Winter or Spring?

In my February post we had had some warm weather and we were all feeling quite Spring-like in Cantlop. However, since then we have had snow, frost and hailstones often on the same day, but it is quite comforting to watch the weather rumbling across the fields whilst you enjoy the warmth of The Shippen.

We saw two signs of Spring yesterday; a Lapwing crying overhead and a flock of House Martins just up the lane.

Spring is in the air

It’s mid February and the daffodil buds are beginning to break cover. It often snows here just as they bloom but the forecast is looking quite promising. If it snows, the underfloor heating will keep you warm and there are plenty of logs for the log burner.

The sparrows are beginning to build their nests and the birds are definitely beginning to be more vocal in the mornings. Cantlop is coming to life.

‘Spring Greens’

Sat 9th March to Sat 6th April 2019.  Twenty Twenty Gallery in Ludlow is an exciting new space for us, just off the main Market Square, so very central for all the festivals and activities. There are plenty of great places for breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. And plenty of walks to renew your appetite.

We shall look forward to seeing you!

Endless Summer

Summer at The Shippen has been glorious, although the grass has suffered a bit with a lack of rain. The House Martins nesting in the Shippen eaves have had more than one clutch and are now flying in family groups across the surrounding landscape extending their flights in preparation for the much longer flight back to Africa and they will be lining up with the Swallows soon signalling the end of the summer and the arrival of autumn. Meanwhile the log store has been replenished from our woodland in readiness for our winter visitors to The Shippen. A glass of wine in front of the wood burning stove beckons. Christmas and New Year are fully booked but there’s still space in November for an early winter break.

A little bit of Magic in Cantlop 2018

It has been the most wonderful May here. The lanes are overflowing with cow parsley and blossoming hawthorn trees (also known as May trees). The house martins and swallows are circling above but yet to nest. We have seen and heard peewits in the fields around us.

A few evenings ago, I was in The Shippen garden and saw two deer in the adjoining field. I took a quick snap over the hedge just before they both disappeared.

A little bit of magic in Cantlop.

Early Summer 2017

Camtlop, leading to the Hollow Way

One of the great things about The Shippen is that nothing happens down here at the end of the lane so I often forget to update the News page. I can report that the birds have plenty to say, the hedges are stuffed with sparrows, the house martins have returned to the eaves and the dawn chorus has been spectacular. The fields have been sown with wheat, barley and maize and just a week ago I saw a barn owl cruise over the wheat field.

Of course if you decide to leave Cantlop you can walk down the Hollow Way, across the Cound Brook and up to Berrington. Or further afield you will find plenty to do  in Shropshire over the summer months. The following links will list events and places to visit:

March 2016

Welcome to 2016! The dark days of Winter are behind us and there is definitely a feeling of Spring in the step and in the air. On Sunday we experienced our first snow of the season but had to go to Wales to find it and whilst it has been really cold here, we have had very few frosts.

The views from The Shippen are great at this time of year. The colour of The Wrekin is continually changing from dark purples to pinks and all shades of grey. The sparrows are getting very excited in the hedgerows and Hugh has been hedgelaying, with some gaps to be planted around The Shippen this weekend.

It’s a perfect time to book your break. Short breaks for a much needed rest and longer breaks to explore the area at a more leisurely pace.

Spring is here!

Rapefield1, Near The Shippen, CantlopWe have hardly had a Winter and Spring has suddenly blossomed in the last week. Fields of rape are an eye-watering, vivid yellow and the hedges are greening quickly. Around The Shippen the hedgerows are alive with young blackbirds that have just fledged and sparrows chattering excitedly.

At Twenty Twenty Gallery our British Glassmakers and Printmakers exhibition kicked off with a great glassblowing demonstration by Tim Boswell and Elliot Walker, also known as The Bandits of Glass. There are some stunning pieces in the exhibition by 7 artists/makers including Peter Layton of London Glassblowing. The British Printmakers  section includes some excellent collectors prints by John Piper (Whitwick Manor below) and Richard Bawden and contemporary printmakers Rosemary Vanns and Mychael Barratt. It’s definitely worth a visit and is on until 24th May.

It’s hot!

Our first winter visitors have gone and despite the cold wet weather they have all been very warm, so much so that the underfloor heating with the wood-burning stove makes it positively hot!

Here are some of our latest visitor comments:

“A great way to end the old year and start the new! The Shippen proved to be a cosy haven in what was a blustery and wet New Year. Everything superbly catered for in a modern but cosy style. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and hope to revisit in the future”. Sue, Clive, Carol & Paul

“The house is lovely. Hope to come back another time”. Shaun & Marc

“We were blown away by the whole thing. Beautiful, welcoming house. The view is simply stunning. Thank you for introducing us to Shropshire”. Sue & Dave

Sue Campion RBA – Twenty Twenty Gallery

Sep 25 2013TF8_2963-twenty-twenty-pastel

If you love the countryside and you enjoy original works of art then do try and visit our gallery in Much Wenlock to see this exhibition of new work by Sue Campion.

The pastels that Sue uses are hand made by Unison Colour in Northumberland. Hugh and I visited Unison recently and watched the pastels being made, it really is a labour of love.
Working with both Sue and Unison, Twenty Twenty Gallery has now produced three sets of pastels, all have been selected by Sue Campion to reflect the colours that she uses in her landscapes. So, if you would like to have a go, they make a perfect present.
